  • 10 Things I Love About GLEE

I had this in my Drafts bin for quite some time and for obvious reasons (*cough* 8/10 *cough*) but I thought I should post it anyways.

My friend despises this show. She asked why I liked it and here it is, in no particular order:

    1. The brilliant dialogue and witty humor especially when concocted with pop culture references only the truly tasteful know or when in the form of a stinging whipcrack insult.

    2. The musical numbers (not so much the singing though).

    3. The parallels between the high school hierarchy and social hierarchy in general.

    4. One of the most touching and realistic portrayals of a gay teenager.

    5. Jane Lynch’s acting. Her character is obviously not to be taken seriously—she’s a caricature—but there is still a sense of humanity in her that makes this villain totally lovable.

    6. The diversity of the songs used and their exceptional incorporation into the plot to express complex human emotions.

    7. The challenging of social norms such as those regarding gender roles and sex. One instance in particular was when Sue asks Kurt whether he has ever kissed a boy and a girl before to which he replies no to both. She proceeds to tell him that that is the problem. Our generation is so concerned with labeling that we restrain ourselves from experimentation and learning more about ourselves.

    8. The triumph of geek and how being disenfranchised leads to a deeper understanding of the world.

  • Just a little rant to keep me sane

So I’m beginning to think that my friend is a little tasteless. What do I do?

So we talk about movies and she mentions some of her favourites and some of the ones she’s ever so eagerly awaiting to see. She also talks about her obsession with Disney movies.

And I understand, Disney films are not just fun entertainment for the kids but usually incorporate important social commentaries on issues currently affecting our everyday. Take for example Mulan which not only showcased one of the most basic principles of good vs. evil that are virulently present in all children films (as if such things are distinctly black or white in adult situations… but that’s for another post) but also voiced an opinion on the woman’s role in society which is quite relevant in today’s male-obsessed world.

But, this is not what my friend sees. She takes a film by its face value, what is actually happening rather than the deep undertones or messages the creators want to send. This is what separates bad cinema from good. It not only gives a film a point of view but also leaves a lasting impression—relevance.

    Anyways, I’m just so baffled.

  • LOST IS OVER

Okay, so I just finished watching “The End” and I’m going to have to rant. I must say it totally sucked. The alternate universe or purgatory thingy was very rushed, people recognizing each other in the most boring of ways while interesting recollections were presented in previous episodes. And, in contrast, the real universe moved so slowly.

The climatic fight scene was not at all exciting and really idiotic. The season built up this great foe and then decided to butcher him completely in a couple of seconds. And his defeat had nothing to do with outwitting, outplaying or outlasting (SURVIVOR ftw) him but was solely based on chance! Like wow.

Then the purgatory or whatever bullshit with the bright light when he opened the door—how cliched was that? And this whole sideways universe had nothing to do with the real universe making half of the sixth season a complete waste of time.
They didn’t care to explain the light at the end of the tunnel or where all the other supernatural shit came from too.

Oh my fucking god, I’m just shocked. Like you’d think after building up all the hype, they’d end with a jaw-dropping finale.

“It was a challenging, occasionally infuriating drama that rewarded careful viewing — and that was its selling point.” (CTV.ca)

  • Givenchy's New Ads Feature A Transsexual Model!

OMG how progressive. I sometimes think that trannies (male-to-female ones at least) would make exceptional models. They’d have the height and the bone structure for it. The only thing different would be the hips, in my opinion, but you can easily hide those or stuff ‘em in.

  • You can be less than mediocre and be a fucking movie star. I have respect for very few actors and actresses. Some of them get a lot of acclaim but just because their movie made $200 million at the box office, they still suck. I got no respect for them and I used to let them know it. It was important for me to put that aside and go, ‘You know what? This is a business. If you kiss the right ass and you get lucky on a movie or two, you could last 10 years.’ So, now, I just keep my mouth shut and pet my chihuahuas.

  • Givenchy SS2010

I know these pictures are old but I just had to put them up, after all, the spring/summer season is not over yet.

Everyone knows I’m a huge fan of prints, but these take it to the next level. The chaotic patterns juxtaposed with the simple silhouettes are just spectacular as everything is kept interesting without losing any sophistication.  The collection also features some of my other loves: tights under shorts, harem pants, and gladiator sandals (with stud detailing and intricate straps as added bonuses).

  • A Single Man OST

The movie was alright—beautifully captured, amazing fashions, hot and talented actors and actresses, and nice character development. But most notable, in my opinion, was the OST. Sadly, my lack of expertise on music theory warrants this post to be rather irrelevant. OH WELL!

My favourite tracks were Abel Korzeniowski’s “Swimming” and “And Just Like That.”

  • HBO’s Temple Grandin

Besides the fact that I’m a firm believer in animal rights and a huge fan of Claire Danes, the winning factor of this movie can be quickly outlined with the following flowchart:

    autism >
    neurodiversity >
diversity in any form (ex. sexual orientation, race, gender, politics, religion) =
    straying from the norm >
struggle for acceptance and relevance =
    universal to all

In other words, this biopic is a metaphor for any sort of minority struggle that has ever taken place or will ever take place (recall District 9). The film also demonstrates in an extraordinarily unique way how compassion and stepping into other people’s shoes—in the form of Grandin physically imitating the behaviour of cattle to gain insight into their mentality—can have beneficial results.
